In Portland, Oregon you'll find this beautiful modern skyscraper, the 1000 Broadway Building. It was built in 1991 on the site of the old Broadway Theatre which had one of the most elaborate theatre marquees in the Pacific Northwest. A new Broadway 4-plex cinema (which closed in 2011) was built into the corner of the new tower. You can see it if you look closely.
At left is the vertical sign from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, which was originally the Paramount Theatre. It was refurbished in the early 1980s. This sign originally read "Paramount." Arlene Schnitzer donated much of the money needed to refurbish the theatre on the condition that it be named after her. The story goes that city officials didn't feel it was appropriate to replace "Paramount" with "Schnitzer" on that big sign, so "Portland" was used instead. The Schnitzer name is tastefully located over the front doors.
I made this photo in November 1994.
