This is one of two houses on Monterey's Cannery Row, located across the street from the Monterey Plaza Hotel. They were built around 1910 as part of the Tevis-Murray Estate, which included a sprawling mansion built on the rugged shoreline where the hotel is now. These houses, which are believed to have been either servant quarters or guest houses, are all that remain of the estate. In 1941 the mansion was demolished to make way for a sardine cannery, which in turn was replaced by the hotel in the mid 1980s. In 1952, the houses played a prominent role in the movie "Clash By Night" as the homes of cannery workers and fishermen.
I made this image in June 2003.
