This is one of two houses on Monterey's Cannery Row, located across the street from what is now the Monterey Plaza Hotel. They were built around 1910 as part of the Tevis-Murray Estate, which included a sprawling mansion built on the rugged shoreline where the hotel is today. These houses, which are believed to have been either servant quarters or guest houses, are all that remain of the estate. In 1941 the mansion was demolished to make way for a sardine cannery, which in turn was replaced by the hotel in the mid 1980s. In 1952, the houses played a prominent role in the movie "Clash By Night" as the homes of cannery workers and fishermen.

In the fall of 1959, Mr. Toy entered this world at a place called Carmel on California's Monterey Peninsula. Nine years later his family pulled up stakes for the rain-soaked city of Salem, Oregon where he never quite fit in. When he was 12, he and his mother viewed an exhibit of photographs by a Salem newspaper photographer, which inspired him to take his first photography class. During his teenage years he gradually developed his eye for composition and his skills with light and exposure. Though he did not pursue photography as a career, he has continued to document his observations of the world on small frames of film.
