Product Details

Our spiral notebooks are 6" x 8" in size and include 120 pages which are lined on both sides. The artwork is printed on the front cover which is made of thick paper stock, and the back cover is medium gray in color. The inside of the back cover includes a pocket for storing extra paper and pens.

We were in San Francisco the day before Thanksgiving in 1997. We stopped in Saks across from Union Square for lunch and some browsing. The corner of the building has big windows on each floor overlooking the street. While Mrs. Toy was shopping, I took my camera to the windows and got shots of the streetcorner from a couple of floors. As luck would have it, the mounted police came across. I photographed them waiting for the light to change, and while crossing the street. This was the best of the series. It won first prize in the "People" category at the 1998 Monterey County Fair.

The composition was part planning and part luck. The stoplight offered a good centerpiece. To provide human interest I needed to include the four people on the island waiting for the cable car, and the woman waiting to cross. These elements formed the basis for the composition. In the fall of 1959, Mr. Toy entered this world at a place called Carmel on California's Monterey Peninsula. Nine years later his family pulled up stakes for the rain-soaked city of Salem, Oregon where he never quite fit in. When he was 12, he and his mother viewed an exhibit of photographs by a Salem newspaper photographer, which inspired him to take his first photography class. During his teenage years he gradually developed his eye for composition and his skills with light and exposure. Though he did not pursue photography as a career, he has continued to document his observations of the world on small frames of film.
