A DC-8, number N8245U, a cargo aircraft from the "EMERY AIR FORCE" fleet parked on a tarmac at Medford Oregon. Several individuals from a maintenance crew were working on the airplane. I just happened to stumble on the scene while I was at the airport with a friend who had some business to attend to. We watched the activities for quite awhile until the plane left, and we had a chance to chat with one of the men for a bit. In those days nobody got suspicious if you were photographing planes at an airport as they do today. I made this image in July 1979.

In the fall of 1959, Mr. Toy entered this world at a place called Carmel on California's Monterey Peninsula. Nine years later his family pulled up stakes for the rain-soaked city of Salem, Oregon where he never quite fit in. When he was 12, he and his mother viewed an exhibit of photographs by a Salem newspaper photographer, which inspired him to take his first photography class. During his teenage years he gradually developed his eye for composition and his skills with light and exposure. Though he did not pursue photography as a career, he has continued to document his observations of the world on small frames of film.
