A view of the Meier & Frank department store in downtown Portland, as seen from Pioneer Courthouse Square in November 1994. The building was constructed in stages during 1909, 1915, and 1932.
I remember my first visit there as a kid circa 1968. The toy department on the 10th floor had a monorail train that was suspended from the ceiling and took kids for a bird's eye view of the toys available. It felt like riding in a tin can.
At the time I made this photo Meier & Frank still occupied the building. As of this writing, however, it now houses a Macy's department store on the lower floors and a luxury hotel on the upper levels. Macy's acquired Meier & Frank's parent company in the mid 2000s.
