I made this photograph on December 21st, 1999 during the last full moon of the year, which was also the year's brightest. It was a cold and somewhat windy night, but that did not stop me from setting up my tripod at several spots along the shores of Carmel. Here, at Carmel River Beach I spotted this man standing alone on the beach watching the waves in the moonlight. A long exposure, in the range of 30-60 seconds if memory serves, blurred the waves into a foggy mist. Fortunately the man stayed fairly still, moving just enough to make himself look a bit misty too.

In the fall of 1959, Mr. Toy entered this world at a place called Carmel on California's Monterey Peninsula. Nine years later his family pulled up stakes for the rain-soaked city of Salem, Oregon where he never quite fit in. When he was 12, he and his mother viewed an exhibit of photographs by a Salem newspaper photographer, which inspired him to take his first photography class. During his teenage years he gradually developed his eye for composition and his skills with light and exposure. Though he did not pursue photography as a career, he has continued to document his observations of the world on small frames of film.
