In April 2003 I want to the Salinas Amtrak station to photograph the southbound Coast Starlight. On the end of the train was this private railcar. When the Starlight pulled away, it left this railcar standing at the station. I was informed that the car belonged to a local businessman who rented private railcars to individuals and groups, and attached to regularly scheduled Amtrak trains. Before long, this car was attached to a local freight train, to deliver it to the owner.
Normally I would advise against getting this close to the tracks to make a photograph, but since the car was not attached to a locomotive at the time, there was no danger of the car running me over.
