This flower, which I have been told is called wood mint, is fairly common in the forests of California's central coast. In reality, it's only a couple of inches tall and it has a slightly sweet herbal-minty smell.
I made this image sometime during May 1996 in the meadow of Carmel's Hatton Canyon, which at the time was threatened to be destroyed by a proposed freeway bypass. Fortunately a few years later the project was abandoned and the right-of-way was transferred to California State Parks for permanent protection.
