The San Carlos Cathedral in downtown Monterey was originally called the Royal Presidio Chapel. It was completed in 1794, and is the oldest continuously operating church in California. This image was made in August 2006, three years before it underwent a major restoration and much-needed seismic retrofitting. As part of the restoration, the gate in the foreground, which was not original (I believe it dates to the 1930s) was removed. Frankly, I think it looked better with the gate than without it.
