Amtrak Train #14, the northbound Coast Starlight, pulls into the station at Salem, Oregon on a rainy day in May 2005. It is led by a General Electric P42DC Genesis locomotive #113 in the Phase V color scheme.

On this particular day my wife and I were to board the southbound train, #11, to return home to Monterey. There was some question as to which train would arrive first. As fortune would have it, #14 won the race, providing me with an opportunity to photograph two arriving trains. I positioned myself by the depot door to capture the people exiting the building to meet the train. So the composition was part planning and part luck to get people in the right places at the right moment.

In the fall of 1959, Mr. Toy entered this world at a place called Carmel on California's Monterey Peninsula. Nine years later his family pulled up stakes for the rain-soaked city of Salem, Oregon where he never quite fit in. When he was 12, he and his mother viewed an exhibit of photographs by a Salem newspaper photographer, which inspired him to take his first photography class. During his teenage years he gradually developed his eye for composition and his skills with light and exposure. Though he did not pursue photography as a career, he has continued to document his observations of the world on small frames of film.
